Who was Asokananda?

Asokananda is a well-known figure in the field of Thai massage. He is the founder and director of the Sunshine Network, an organization that promotes the study and practice of Thai massage and related traditional healing arts. Asokananda is also a teacher and author and has written several books on Thai massage and related topics.

Asokananda is considered to be an expert in the field of Thai massage and has played a significant role in promoting and popularizing the practice around the world. He has trained and certified many practitioners in the art of Thai massage, and his teachings and approach to the practice have influenced many in the field.

In addition to his work with the Sunshine Network, Asokananda is also involved in a number of other projects and initiatives related to Thai massage and traditional healing arts. He has taught and lectured at various schools, universities, and conferences around the world, and has worked with organizations and institutions to promote the study and practice of Thai massage.

Asokananda studied community development in Germany. Since 1978 he has spent most of his time in Asia. He studied Vipassana meditation with Sayadaw U Janaka in Burma, yoga with Yogavacara Rahula in Sri Lanka and Thai massage with Piched Boonthumme and Chaiyuth Priyasith in Thailand. He was temporarily ordained as a Buddhist monk in Sri Lanka.

Asokananda passed away on the 24th June 2005 after a sudden illness.
