The psoas muscles

The psoas muscles (pronounced “so-as”) are a pair of muscles located in the abdomen and lower back. The psoas major muscle originates at the lower vertebrae of the spine and inserts into the upper thigh bone (femur). The psoas minor muscle originates at the lower vertebrae of the spine and inserts into the lower spine.

The psoas muscles play a crucial role in movement and posture. They are responsible for flexing the hip joint, which allows us to bring our leg up and move it forward. They also help to stabilize the lower back and pelvis, which is important for maintaining good posture.

To stretch the psoas muscles, you can try the following stretch:

  1. Start in a lunge position with your left foot forward and your right foot behind you.
  2. Place your hands on your left thigh and gently push your hips forward until you feel a stretch in the front of your right thigh and hip.
  3. Hold the stretch for 30 seconds to 1 minute, then switch sides and repeat on the other side.

You can also try the following stretch:

  1. Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor.
  2. Bring your right ankle to your left knee and use your hands to gently press down on your right knee, bringing it closer to your chest.
  3. Hold the stretch for 30 seconds to 1 minute, then switch sides and repeat on the other side.

It’s important to stretch the psoas muscles gently and avoid overstretching or forcing the stretch. If you experience any pain or discomfort while stretching, stop the stretch and consult with a healthcare professional.
