Studying the Skeleton

Here is a list of all the bones in the human body, organized by body region:

Skull:

  • Frontal bone: This bone is located in the forehead and forms the brow and upper part of the eye sockets.
  • Parietal bones: These bones are located on either side of the skull and form the top and sides of the head.
  • Occipital bone: This bone is located at the back of the skull and forms the base of the head.
  • Temporal bones: These bones are located on either side of the skull and form the lower part of the sides of the head, as well as the ear canal.
  • Ethmoid bone: This bone is located in the center of the face and forms the bridge of the nose and the roof of the eye sockets.
  • Sphenoid bone: This bone is located in the center of the skull and forms the base of the eye sockets and the back of the nose.

Vertebral column (spine):

  • Cervical vertebrae: These bones are located in the neck and form the top part of the spine. There are seven cervical vertebrae.
  • Thoracic vertebrae: These bones are located in the upper back and form the middle part of the spine. There are 12 thoracic vertebrae.
  • Lumbar vertebrae: These bones are located in the lower back and form the lower part of the spine. There are five lumbar vertebrae.
  • Sacrum: This bone is located at the base of the spine and is formed by the fusion of five vertebrae.
  • Coccyx (tailbone): This bone is located at the very bottom of the spine and is formed by the fusion of four vertebrae.

Chest:

  • Sternum (breastbone): This bone is located in the center of the chest and forms the front of the ribcage.
  • Ribs: There are 12 pairs of ribs that form the ribcage and protect the organs in the chest. The first seven pairs of ribs are attached to the sternum by costal cartilage, while the last five pairs are not attached to the sternum and are referred to as “floating” ribs.

Upper extremities (arms):

  • Scapulae (shoulder blades): These bones are located on the back and form the shoulder joint.
  • Clavicles (collarbones): These bones are located on the front of the chest and form the shoulder joint.
  • Humeri (upper arm bones): These bones are located in the upper arm and form the elbow joint.
  • Ulnae (forearm bones): These bones are located in the lower arm and form the elbow joint.
  • Radii (forearm bones): These bones are located in the lower arm and form the wrist joint.
  • Carpals (wrist bones): There are eight carpals that form the wrist joint.
  • Metacarpals (hand bones): There are five metacarpals that form the hand.
  • Phalanges (finger bones): There are 14 phalanges in the hand, with three in each finger (except the thumb, which has two) and two in each thumb.

Lower extremities (legs):

  • Pelvic bones: There are two pelvic bones, the left and right os coxae, which form the hip joint.
